Meet Patrice, our one of a kind therapist specialized in Esalen Massage. Stop in and let her nourish and restore you so you can feel rejuvenated and relaxed as you head back to school or work this fall.
THS: How long have you been a Certified Massage Therapist? Tell us a bit about your training.
Patrice: For 15 years. I had been living and working at Esalen Institute, an educational retreat center in Big Sur, and when my residential program was nearly up, the opportunity to study Esalen Massage in Bali presented itself. Lucky me! I had an excuse to travel to Southeast Asia and study Esalen Massage for a month—something I hadn’t managed to do during my 2 year stay at Esalen. I ended up staying in SE Asia for 4 months which included my 2 week study of Thai Massage in Chaing Mai, Thailand as well.
THS: What inspired you to become a Certified Massage Therapist?
Patrice: Just prior to my training as a CMT, I had committed to a 3 year training to become a certified teacher and practitioner of Cortical Field Reeducation. CFR is a movement based education program based on the teachings of Moshe Feldenkrais. I knew that training in massage would benefit me in my CFR training by giving me more knowledge of the body as well as more experience in doing hands on work.
THS: What do you enjoy most about your practice?
Patrice: The opportunity to provide a service that nourishes, relaxes, and restores people. It often feels like a dance to me, one I also find nourishing and restorative.
THS: What do you love most about working at the Tea House Spa?
Patrice: The people I work with, the clientele we serve, the unpretentious atmosphere, and the bamboo garden that is like a hidden treasure in the middle of downtown Santa Cruz.
THS: What are some things you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Patrice: Spending time in nature—long walks on the beach or among the redwoods, creating or listening to music, and spending time with friends.
THS: What are three words you would use to describe yourself?
Patrice: Curious, kind, playful
THS: Thank you Patrice! We hope you are around to nourish our clients for many years to come.
